Azure Software Licensing Report

By default, when you deploy a Windows VM in Azure, the costs accrued for the VM will include a licensing charge for Windows Server. Similarly, when you deploy an Azure SQL database (an Azure SQL VM, Azure SQL Database, or Azure Managed Instance), it will include a software licensing charge for the SQL database.

However, if you enable the Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) for a deployed VM or an Azure SQL database, you can then apply Windows Server and SQL Server licenses entitlements that you may currently have and avoid paying unnecessary software licensing charges for those resources. For more information, see Enable Azure Hybrid Benefits.

You can select the currency for your report. All costs shown in the report will be converted to this currency.

The Azure Software Licensing Report provides the following licensing and costing information:

  • Potential Savings — This report section displays your deployed resources that don't have the AHB enabled, and the potential savings that can be realized if AHB is enabled for them and license entitlements are applied.
  • Current Azure Hybrid Benefit Savings — This report section displays your current usage of Azure Hybrid Benefits for Windows VMs and Azure SQL databases. For reference, it displays the price for each resource if AHB wasn't enabled. It also displays the price you are paying for each resource with AHB is enabled and an existing license entitlement applied to the resource. Together, this pricing information shows you the savings that you are realizing by using Azure Hybrid Benefits.
  • The costs displayed for Windows VMs and Azure SQL databases with AHB enabled presumes that you've applied license entitlements to those resources through the Azure portal.
  • Each AHB-eligible resource is listed as either a Windows VM or an Azure SQL database instance. An exception is an Azure SQL VM, which will be listed twice: once as a Windows VM with a Microsoft Server license and once as a Managed SQL resource with an SQL Server license.
