Prerequisites

  • A user account with the Software Asset Managers role enabled and all computers assigned to it on the BigFix Inventory/ILMT server.

  • A user account with REST API permissions enabled and all computers assigned to it on the BigFix Server (Console).

    For information on how to configure the API user, see BigFix Server (Console).

    Note

    The user account for the BigFix Server (Console) is not required when integration is to be configured using ILMT only.

  • It is the responsibility of each customer to ensure that their BigFix Inventory or ILMT implementation is working correctly and that all activities associated with BigFix Inventory or ILMT are functioning. Otherwise, insufficient data will be retrieved by the connector and Snow License Manager will not be able to report accurately.

  • A supported version of HCL BigFix is required. Refer to Snow Compatibility Matrix for versions supported by the Snow Integration Connector for HCL BigFix Inventory.

  • Connector is using a combination of BigFix Inventory V2 and V1 APIs - we recommend updating BFI to version 10.0.1 so that the better-quality data is fetched. The connector will fall back to the available REST API endpoints if this condition is not met.

  • For fetching of detailed hardware data - BigFix Inventory version 9.2.12 (or later) is required. Additional configuration in BigFix console is necessary, further explained in section Detailed Hardware Information.

  • For fetching of raw scanned file data for Windows devices – BigFix Inventory version 10.0.1 (or later) is required. Additional configuration in BigFix console is necessary, further explained in section Windows Raw File Information.

Note

If licenses are registered in Snow License Manager with other metrics than "PVU" for the reported application, the metric of the application will not change. In those cases the recommendation is to manually change the metric of the application to "PVU" before configuring the connector. For detailed information, refer to Web User Interface for Snow License Manager 9 or Web User Interface for Snow License Manager 8.

BigFix Infrastructure

A typical BigFix deployment consists of:

  • BigFix clients

  • BigFix server and its database

  • BigFix Inventory/ILMT and its database

The inventory data that is gathered by the BigFix platform can be sent to IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) or to HCL BigFix Inventory. For more details, see the respective links:
